Review: Nightshade by Andrea Cremer

Title: Nightshade
Author: Andrea Cremer
Publish Date: October 19, 2010
Summary:
While other teenage girls daydream about boys, Calla Tor imagines ripping out her enemies’ throats. And she wouldn’t have it any other way. Calla was born a warrior and on her eighteenth-birthday she’ll become the alpha female of the next generation of Guardian wolves. But Calla’s predestined path veers off course the moment she saves the life of a wayward hiker, a boy her own age. This human boy’s secret will turn the young pack's world upside down and forever alter the outcome of the centuries-old Witches' War that surrounds them all.

Review:
Beautiful Book Cover for a beautifully written story. Nighshade by debut writer Andrea Cremer, is probably one of the best books I have read this year, needless to say that it blew my mind.

Calla Tor is the alpha of the young Nightshade wolf pack. She would do anything to protect her pack, and if she wants to do that, she has to become the mate of the Bane pack’s alpha, Renier Laroche. Popular and good-looking Ren, who is anticipating their union a lot more than Calla. And who isn’t as confident and smug as he wants to seem, especially not when it comes to Calla.

But just a month before Calla and Ren’s elopement, Calla stumbles upon an extremely good-looking wounded hiker. And against everything she has been told, and without knowing why, she saves this certain human. Shay Doran, the hiker who she secretly saved from death, creates all kinds of trouble for her when they end up meeting again. What she doesn’t know is that by saving this hiker, her life will no longer be what she expected it to be. And Shay, without knowing this himself, Is more than just the human he thinks he is. In a world where human beings are seen as nothing and the female wolves seen as inferiors, this not-so-human-girl must make some choices, and take on the consequences.

I have wanted to read this book for months, and looking at the beautiful cover made me even more impatient. When I finally got the opportunity to read it, I was not disappointed. This book has it all: Action packed scenes, secret romances , friendships tested, funny moments, strong female main character and some shocking discoveries along the way. And don’t forget two beautiful but very different guys trying to win Calla’s affections. Shay who is charming, sweet, and fearless. And Ren who is strong, possessive, and also incredibly charming . With unexpected twists and turns with every page I turned, this incredibly written book left me anticipating Book 2 (Wolfsbane) even more than this first one. I wasn't lucky enough to keep this book, but when it it is officially released I am most definitely buying it!

My Rating: 5/5!

Teaser Quote:
"I took another step toward him. I knew what I wanted to do, but it would mean a second, much-greater violation of the Keepers’ Laws. He tried to move back but gasped in pain and collapsed into his elbows."
Age recommendation: I would recommend this book to older young adults due to the somewhat steamy love scenes. Not bad at all, just a little warning for the younger readers.

A little about the author:

Andrea Cremer spent her childhood daydreaming and roaming the forests and lakeshores of Northern Wisconsin. She now lives in Minnesota, but she thinks of her homeland as the “Canadian Shield” rather than the Midwest.

Andrea has always loved writing and has never stopped writing, but she only recently plunged into the deep end of the pool that is professional writing. When she’s not writing, Andrea teaches history at a very nice liberal arts college in St. Paul.

In the little spare time she can find, Andrea stares up at trees, rescues infant rabbits from predatory cats, and invents names for pug puppies with her husband. She has an unfortunate tendency to spill things – white carpets beware!

Her debut novel, NIGHTSHADE, the first of a YA fantasy series, will be published in fall 2010 by Penguin. Bio source: Goodreads.com

Can't wait to read this book! Anybody read it yet?

Final "Last Sacrifice" By Richelle Mead Book Cover!

For those of you who haven't seen the cover of Last Sacrifice: here it is! The book cover of the last book of the Vampire Academy series!--Insert sad face here-- But from what I've read on Richelle Mead's blog, there is going to be a "spin-off"series with characters we already know and it is going to be in the VA world. She also mentioned Rose will have "walk-in roles". Crossing my fingers on that one.
Last Sacrifice will be published December 7th (so far away!) And this hopefully will not be the last we read about Rose Hathaway's rebellious ways. Dimitri Belikov! That's all I have to say!

Blog's New Look!

Okay so as you can see, my blog went through a little bit of a makeover. But yes it is still "More Than Just A Book". I spent almost 3 hours looking for the right background and look that I felt comfortable with. Because, I admit, I was a little attached to my old one. But I had to let it go due to the fact that my background provider's Photobucket account was going to terminate on Friday. And thanks to the 4 day heads up(4 days really?) I had to look frantically for a background that I liked, therefore I had almost no time to post anything other than this.Yes, I am a bit picky when it comes to that.

It's no excuse, I know! But I had to do this in a rush but not make it look like I was in a rush. I think I actually did a good job! What do you guys think? Let me know in the comments! I am really behind on posts, lots of great book news and an upcoming review of Linger By Maggie Stiefvater. I will get to posting as soon as I can! Thanks guys!

Book Review: Stolen By Lucy Christopher

Author: Lucy Christopher
Published: May 4, 2009
My Review:
I didn’t intend to buy this book, to be honest, I was just drawn by the beautiful and simple cover. But while I was drinking my cup of coffee at my local bookstore, I started reading it out of mere curiosity.
It is written in a completely different point of view, far more differently than any other YA book I have read, and trust me; I have read my share of YA books!
Even in the beginning of the story, the climax was already set, and it pulled me deep into the story to the point that I had to know what was going to happen to the main character. Gemma, describes everything so adequately and precise that it’s as if you were there. Of course, nobody would want to be in her place. Isolated and away from human interaction, the only person she can talk to is her mysterious abductor, Ty.
His handsome features and charming personality were the things that lured Gemma into his abduction plan, but can they win her over?
Well he certainly won me over. Little by little I began to understand why Tyler did what he did (though it was not the right thing), and I began to feel as confused as Gemma was about him. The story also describes Gemma’s experience and rage at not being able to escape that horrible place, in the middle of nowhere. And eventually this place, this desert, starts growing into a character of its own until you forget that it is just dust, mounds and mounds of it. In the end, I felt confused about my feelings for that mysterious abductor and my heart broke as I read the last chapter of this beautifully written novel.
To get more info on the book go HERE.Age Preference: In my opinion this book is for older young adult readers. Due to the mild language.

Review: 4.5/5

Little info about Lucy Christopher:
She is currently undertaking a PhD with Bath Spa University to explore the ways that Australian literature represents wild places, particularly in its writing for young adults. Lucy’s debut novel, Stolen, was written as part of this PhD. It explores her thoughts about the Australian desert in the story of a teenage girl who is kidnapped and taken there. Read more about Lucy in her site HERE.

Tamora Pierce Fans: NEW BOOK!

Sorry I couldn't get a bigger cover, Google you have disappointed me for the first time! So you get this insy bitsy picture of how Tamora Pierce's new upcoming book ,Tortall and Other Lands: A Collection Of Tales, will probably look like. Which will be published February 22nd, 2011.
Synopsis:
Collected here for the first time are all of the tales from the land of Tortall, featuring both previously unknown characters as well as old friends. Filling some gaps of time and interest, these stories, some of which have been published before, will lead Tammy's fans, and new readers into one of the most intricately constructed worlds of modern fantasy.

So as you guys know I bought Linger and Stolen over at Barnes and Noble. And yesterday I recieved an ARC of Nightshade by Andrea Cremer from Good Golly Miss Holly's book Tours. Thanks Holly!

Have YOU Pre-Ordered Your Copy?

Two Days ago, I went to my local Barnes and Noble and I noticed this sign that said, "Pre-Order Mockingjay now! ( In-store or Online)" So when I finished looking for books (about 2 hours later) I asked the cashier if I could pre-order Mockingjay. And she signed me up, asked me for my name, and ta-da! I had pre-ordered Mockingjay, free of charge! So when August 24 comes (I will be in school) I will get a call letting me know that the book is there , then I will go to the store and tell them my name and a copy of Mockingjay magically appears!

Only there is nothing magical about me having to pay for it. So go to your local Barnes and Noble, or Pre-Order it online HERE. If you would like. So what about YOU? Have you pre-ordered YOUR copy yet? Only 37 days left! Can't wait..well I have to. PEETA! Sorry about the late postings guys, I'm a night-owl so I will usually post at night. In My Bookshelf: The Actual Thing!

1. Title? Stolen By Lucy Christopher Published May 4, 2009

Bought, Won, Or Received? Bought

Summary: Sixteen year old Gemma is kidnapped from Bangkok airport and taken to the Australian Outback. This wild and desolate landscape becomes almost a character in the book, so vividly is it described. Ty, her captor, is no stereotype. He is young, fit and completely gorgeous. This new life in the wilderness has been years in the planning. He loves only her, wants only her. Under the hot glare of the Australian sun, cut off from the world outside, can the force of his love make Gemma love him back? The story takes the form of a letter, written by Gemma to Ty, reflecting on those strange and disturbing months in the outback. Months when the lines between love and obsession, and love and dependency, blur until they don't exist - almost.Summary from Goodreads.com.

2. Title? Linger By Maggie Stiefvater Published July 13, 2010

Bought, Won, Or Received? Bought

Summary: In Maggie Stiefvater's Shiver, Grace and Sam found each other. Now, in Linger, they must fight to be together. For Grace, this means defying her parents and keeping a very dangerous secret about her own well-being. For Sam, this means grappling with his werewolf past...and figuring out a way to survive into the future. Add into the mix a new wolf named Cole, whose own past has the potential to destroy the whole pack. And Isabel, who already lost her brother to the wolves...and is nonetheless drawn to Cole. At turns harrowing and euphoric, Linger is a spellbinding love story that explores both sides of love--the light and the dark, the warm and the cold--in a way you will never forget. Summary From Goodreads.com

In My Bookshelf!

So I can honestly say what's new in my bookshelf, since I finally bought one instead of using my T.V. stand and pretty much every empty surface around my room to put my books over. After a lot of coaxing and 30 books later, I was able to convince my parents to buy me one.So after a lot of struggle trying to put the thing together(and about 10 splinters later), I finally was able to transfer my books over and now I can organize them! Hooray for physical labor....
I will be posting a "In My Bookshelf" post everytime I buy, win(not likely), or recieve a book. Who knows how many I'll post up? Hopefully many!

Upcoming "Clockwork Angel" by Cassandra Clare Excerpt!

Cassandra Clare Tweeted this and the guys over at MortalInstruments.net posed it up on their site:

Will went back to scrubbing dried vampire blood off his hands and arms. The task was absorbing enough that he was able to almost completely ignore Gabriel Lightwood when the other boy appeared out of the shadows and sauntered over to Will, a superior smile plastered on his face.

“Nice work in there, Herondale, setting the place on fire,” Gabriel observed. “Good thing we were there to clean up after you, or the whole plan would have gone down in flames, along with the shreds of your reputation.”

“Are you implying that shreds of my reputation remain intact?” Will demanded with mock horror. “Clearly I have been doing something wrong. Or not doing something wrong, as the case may be.” He banged on the side of the carriage. “Thomas! We must away at once to the nearest brothel! I seek scandal and low companionship.”

Thomas snorted and muttered something that sounded like “bosh,” which Will ignored.

Gabriel’s face darkened. “Is there anything that isn’t a joke to you?”

“Nothing that comes to mind.”

“You know,” Gabriel said, “there was a time I thought we could be friends, Will.”

“There was a time I thought I was a ferret,” Will said, “but that turned out to be the opium haze. Did you know it had that effect? Because I didn’t.”

I Cannot Wait!

Cassandra also posted a story(outtake) in her website a that was meant to be written as a part of City Of Glass, but in the end it wasn't.You Can read it HERE. Enjoy!

.

The cover is some what frightening and I can't wait to read more of Lisa McMann's work, loved the Wake series.

Infinite Days by Rebecca Maizel Book Trailer

What do you guys think? I thought I should post it up since I reviewed it and all...

First Review Evah! : "Infinite Days" by Rebecca Maizel

Author: Rebecca Maizel
Release Date: August 3, 2010
Synopsis:
She longs to be like everybody else. But her history is written in blood...Lenah Beaudonte is in many ways your average sixteen-year-old: the “new girl,” she struggles to fit in enough to survive at school, and stand out enough to catch the eye of the golden-boy captain of the lacrosse team. But her challenges are beyond what anyone could have expected. Lenah just happens to be a recovering five-hundred-year-old vampire turned human…She’s just awakened from a century-long hibernation and each passing hour hears another tick of the time-bomb, counting down to the moment when her abandoned vampire coven will open the crypt where she should be sleeping, and find her gone. As her borrowed days slip by, Lenah resolves to live her newfound life as fully as the passing moments allow. But, to do so, she must first answer the ominous questions at hand: Can an ex-vampire survive in a time and place so alien to her? What can Lenah do to protect her new friends from the bloodthirsty menace about to descend upon them? And how is she ever going to pass her biology midterm?
Review:
I have mix feelings about this book. So you might not agree with me when you read the book, if you decide to. I was fortunate enough to win this book on a Goodreads giveaway. Thank You Eileen!I realize that I shouldn't take feeling warmth in my skin and tears in my eyes for granted. That's what Lenah Beaudonte had to live without for about 500 years. That's why she yearned to be human again so much. But she had to learn how to survive in the twenty-first century in order to do that. And I understand why Lenah behaves the way she does: confused, violent, and sometimes superior. I'm not going to spoil it for you.Much. The Plot of the story was incredible. And the way that the author describes what Lenah sees--with so much detail and
feeling-- was impressive.
But my reading pet peeve, is that if the guy that I want the main character to end up with doesn't end up with her, I get sort of upset. Then I get over it. But it also changes the way I feel about a book. Tony, one of the male characters was my absolute favorite: artistic, energetic, and funny. And then there's Justin:Popular, extremely good-looking, and rich. Total cliche when the pretty girl ends up with the hot guy, plus the vampires of course.Throughout the book she changes from a completely ravenous and angry vampire, to a considerate and gentle being. She learns to love and give second chances. And then there's the ending, totally unexpected and surprising. And one heck of a cliff-hanger.
Rating: For now until I find another way to rate I will use numbers: 3.5/5

Teaser Quote! "I don't know. You're sick? You have that weird disease where you can't go out in the sun?"Pg.189.
